WITH Terrence Romeo and Alex Cabagnot sidelined by injuries, Von Pessumal stepped up for San Miguel in a victory over Barangay Ginebra on Sunday.
Pessumal scored 13 points and made three of six attempts from three-point land in a rare start, helping the Beermen put away a 99-91 victory over the Gin Kings on Sunday in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Pessumal’s explosion was a timely one as the Beermen missed the services of Romeo and Cabagnot due to separate injuries.
For Chris Ross though, Pessumal’s offensive performance was no longer a surprise after seeing the former Ateneo star show up in great shape for the coming season.
“Von really had a good preseason and had a good offseason. He came in a little bit stronger, put in a little more weight. He has been performing well in tune-ups,” said Ross.
San Miguel coach Leo Austria said Pessumal’s contribution came in at the right moment.
“Luckily, nag-step up siya. Lagi naman siya kasama sa rotation. It happens na ‘yung ka-rotation niya, si Terrence Romeo at Alex Cabagnot [are injured]. I commend Von for stepping up talaga. I know from the start na meron talaga siya. It’s a blessing in disguise what happened,” said Austria.
Pessumal is grateful for the trust given by Austria.
“I just stay ready to play every game. Thankful kay coach Leo, laki ng tiwala niya sa akin for putting me in the starting five. So it means a lot to me. I have to repay him also,” said the former Ateneo standout.
