THE wheeling and dealing continues for Rain or Shine.
After parting ways with coach Yeng Guiao and letting go of key players Paul Lee and JR Quinahan, the Elasto Painters have re-signed back-up big man Jewel Ponferada and traded rookie guard Josan Nimes.
Ponferada agreed to a three-year deal with the Elasto Painters, while Nimes was shipped to Mahindra for a 2018 draft pick.
“Actually, andito pa si coach Yeng when it was decided to trade him (Nimes), shortly after Mahindra lost (in the quarterfinals),” said new Rain or Shine mentor Caloy Garcia, who took over the team after Guiao accepted the coaching job at NLEX.
Ponferada is the latest among the expiring players team management were able to sign this past week after Jericho Cruz, Raymund Almazan, and Jireh Ibanes.
The signing of the former National University stalwart came after Quinahan and Lee were dealt by the Elasto Painters in separated trades last Thursday.
Quinahan failed to come to terms with the Elasto Painters on a projected two-year, max deal. The Cebuano big man was later traded to GlobalPort for veteran Jay Washington.
Lee was offered a new three-year contract worth the maximum but was shipped to the Star Hotshots in a blockbuster trade involving two-time league MVP James Yap.
Two key players in Beau Belga and Gabe Norwood remained unsigned.
Belga is set to sit down with management on Monday for a make-or-break meeting, while Norwood is currently still vacationing in the US.
“But I think he already sent an email to Atty. Mert (Mondragon) on the contract he’s been asking. I believe management is now reviewing everything,” said Garcia.
