CALOY Garcia said he was partly to blame for Rain or Shine’s major breakdown that led to a deflating 117-105 loss to San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.

Garcia said his failure to call timeouts at the height of the Beermen's scorching scoring run in the second quarter hastened the Elasto Painters’ downfall.

Rain or Shine led by as many as 44-15 early in the second period and was still on top 51-28 at the 5:58 mark when the Beermen suddenly caught fire.

Chris Ross teamed up with import Chris McCullough and Christian Standhardinger as the team went on a huge 21-0 tear before halftime to cut the deficit to 49-52 at the break.

San Miguel went on to win, 117-105, for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Garcia said he could have averted the disaster had he used the timeouts he was trying to preserve for the latter part of the game at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, it was also partly my fault kasi I didn’t know I can use all my timeouts in the first half. Siguro if I was able to call timeouts earlier, maybe we can stop the run. But I only found out at halftime na puwede pala yun. So it’s my fault also,” said the Rain or Shine coach.

Still, Garcia felt the Elasto Painters could regain their composure during the break. But clearly, the tide had shifted in favor of the Beermen, who outscored the Elasto Painters in the third period, 40-21, to take an 89-73 lead.

“Like I said, San Miguel will always be San Miguel. They’re the best team right now, they’re the All-Filipino champion, and they have an NBA-caliber import,” said Garcia.

Demoralizing as the loss may be, Game 3 is a different ballgame altogether, according to Garcia.

“Every game is different, so if you can win the next game and hope for another game, yun lang naman, e,” said the Rain or Shine coach. “You don’t really have to burden yourself with this loss.”
