TERRENCE Romeo’s bad back will force him to miss at least the first two games of the PBA Governors Cup.
GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio said as much as the team wants to start the tournament with the former UAAP Most Valuable Player, the Batang Pier are thinking of the bigger picture in opting to give Romeo's injury more time to heal.
“May back injury pa siya eh, so mga two or three weeks pa siya mawawala,” Jarencio told Spin.ph on Saturday when the Batang Pier dropped an 80-95 decision to Barako Bull in their tune-up match at the Gatorade Hoops Center.
“For sure, first two games (of the Governors Cup), di pa siya (Romeo) makalalaro kasi dapat totally healed siya.”
The 5-foot-11 rookie guard out of Far Eastern University averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during the first seven games of the Commissioner’s Cup before sitting out the team’s last two matches due to his ailing back.
Romeo was recently linked to trade rumors that involved Alaska high-flying veteran guard Cyrus Baguio, which Jarencio denied having any knowledge about.
“Hindi ko alam yung balitang yun eh. Wala, di totoo 'yun,” Jarencio said.
The GlobalPort coach said with the volume shooter out, he expects comebacking import Leroy Hickerson to take the scoring lead alongside veteran playmaker Alex Cabagnot and Jay Washington.
Globalport finished dead last in the Commissioner’s Cup with just one win to show in the nine-game, single-round eliminations.
