SEDRICK Barefield savored his first-ever win in the PBA that came in the form of a 95-88 upset of Barangay Ginebra in the main game of Friday night’s Governors’ Cup twinbill at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The No. 2 overall pick this season capped the moment by hitting a dagger four-point shot with 31 seconds to go which all but sealed the fate of Justine Brownlee and the Kings, while finally stopping the bleeding for the Bossing.

Barefield did the slit throat act and followed it with the famous ‘night, night’ celebration after knocking down the basket from 27 feet out.

But before he gets condemned by the legion of Ginebra fans, the Blackwater guard said it was nothing but just himself having fun on the court after finally getting that breakthrough win for him and the Bossing this season.

“That was the most fitting celebration for the shot. I felt like, ‘Everybody go home, get some good night sleep, and we’ll see you next game,” said Barefield when asked about his actions.

“I’m happy I made that shot. Hopefully, I could pick up some momentum from that shot.”

Barefield did admit he was not really having a good shooting night, that it came as a huge sigh of relief for him when he made the basket.

He finished with 13 points, but was only 5-of-15 from the field – including 1-of-5 from three-point range.

“It’s huge for me. It feels great. I wasn’t having the best shooting night. I was having a tough time finding my spots. So making that shot was big as far as the momentum of the game,” said the 27-year-old former NBA G League player.

Until Barefield came through with that heroic shot, Ginebra was on a surge, coming back from as much as an 80-66 deficit early in the fourth quarter to pull within 91-88 on a split from the line by sophomore guard Stephen Holt.

“I mean to get it against them, that’s probably the best way,” said the highly-touted rookie. “Obviously, we want to win the first game, the second game, and the third game. But I think God just has different plans for everybody.

"The journey sometimes is just up and down," he added, "so I think it’s pretty fitting we got this win.”
