ROOKIE hopeful Jawhar Purdy admitted being a big fan of comedian Vice Ganda, but was quick to deny having dated the controversial ABS-CBN star.
Purdy played down rumors he was the reason why Vice Ganda, Jose Marie Viceral in real life, watched the game between AMA and Wangs during the opener of the PBA D-League 2015 season at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Vice Ganda happens to be a very close friend of Purdy’s agent, Nino Reyes, who also handles the career of Globalport star Terrence Romeo, the player romantically linked previously to the ‘Praybeyt Benjamin’ star.
But Purdy insisted he never went out with the comedian.
“Nope, zero. He’s just a friend of boss Nino and I just admire him as a talent. He is funny,” he said.
Purdy describes himself as a mixture of Romeo and Ping Exciminiano, his fellow SMTM stablemates under Reyes.
“I see myself kinda in between. I am more of a sleeper. I got a lot to prove to people. I don’t have as much hype as the other players, but I am hungry and I am ready to showcase what I can do,” he said.
Two-time PBA MVP Willier Miller, who had a chance to play against Purdy at a bush league in Marikina last year, vouches for the talent of the young Fil-Am cager.
“Grabe yun. Ang galing, may shooting tapos ang bilis. Hirap habulin. Magaling yung bata. May shooting, mabilis, magaling mag dribble. Hindi mo maagawan. Saka nakikita ko, magaling siya mag adjust. Experience at break lang ang kulang nun,” said Miller.
“Sana mapansin siya. May potential yang bata na yan. Kahit medyo maliit sabi nila, wala naman sa height yan. Kung talagang masipag ka at dedicated ka, nakikita ko naman sa kanya. Walang problema run,” he added.
The sweet shooting guard out of Cal-State Stanislaus School, a US NCAA division 2 school, said he’s been focusing himself the past weeks in this Sunday’s Rookie Draft set at the Robinson’s Place in Manila.
“I hope people out there will notice me. I feel like I did well. I feel like I went pretty hard and let it all out on the table. I believe, I can be drafted. I believe in myself,” said Purdy.
The Fil-American ball handler believes this year’s draft class is one of the deepest owing to the number of talents in the 63-man pool.
Purdy already tried out with some teams such as Globalport, Rain or Shine, and Alaska and the 23-year old guard hopes he has done his share in impressing all three teams.
The 5-11 Purdy admitted not taking shots during the Draft Combine as he claims he’s the player who provides more of the intangibles such as defense, hustle, and energy.
“I like the ball in my hands, but I know it’s a team game. That’s why you have to be able to show your all-around game. If you don’t have the ball, set the screens, if you don’t have the ball play, good defense and vice versa,” said Purdy, who looks up to NBA star Chris Paul as his idol.
