RONAL Tubid insisted he had no extra motivation against San Miguel Beer, but was glad to at least give his former team a scare before Kia surrendered a 108-106 decision to the Beermen in their PBA Philippine Cup matchup on Friday night.

Facing a team where he spent the last five years before getting traded last offseason, the 15-year veteran helped the Picanto embark on a furious fightback from 26 points down before seeing former teammate Marcio Lassiter rescue the Beermen.

“It’s really nice to play with my brothers at San Miguel, parang reunion, parang practice lang,” Tubid said. “Pero at least kinabahan sila.”

Tubid contributed in the rally, scoring on a tough double-pump stab that pulled Kia to within 102-100 with two minutes and 49 seconds to go, before Rashawn McCarthy, another former SMB player, gave the Picanto the lead momentarily in the next offensive possession.

Tubid, who finished with seven points, six rebounds, one assist, and one block without committing a single turnover in over 25 minutes as a starter, stressed he had nothing to prove to the Beermen after playing for the team the last five years.

“Wala naman (gustong patunayan),” the 36 year-old cager said. “They know na I can still play.”

“I know that and they know kung ano kaya kong gawin sa defense and offense, so nothing to prove,” the former All-Defensive team member and two-time Mr. Quality Minutes awardee added. “Alam mo naman tayo, pag pinasok sa court, go hard lang.”

As a unit, the Picanto played hard in the second half, but Tubid rued his team’s decision-making down the stretch, particularly McCarthy calling their last timeout with 1:08 left despite being up by a point, 104-103, although the timeout resulted in a Glenn Khobuntin basket that put them up by three points.

“Sayang. It’s a won game na sana, pero that’s the (sign) na hindi pa mature yung team,” the Kia skipper said. “Kagaya nung dapat hindi kami nag-call nung timeout, pero tumimeout kami, so wala na kaming timeout natira, so one of the ano na young team.”

“You’re not supposed to call a timeout; naubusan tuloy kami ng timeout,” Tubid said. “So parang yun yung indication na young team. Kung veteran team yun, they’re going to burn the clock na. They’re going to foul anyway.”

“Pero lahat naman ng team na young team, yun yung process eh,” he added.
