MAGNOLIA came up with a huge second quarter to overwhelm NorthPort, 96-80, on Friday night in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Hotshots gained separation by outscoring the Batang Pier, 37-8, in the second quarter on the way to atoning for an endgame collapse against Meralco in their conference debut.

Both Magnolia and NorthPort now stand at 1-1 (win-loss).

Ian Sangalang had 28 points and nine rebounds while Romeo Travis flirted with a triple-double after finishing with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists for Magnolia, which led by as many as 31 points.

“We just learned a lot from our first game,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero. “Same scenario, we were up for almost 36 minutes doon sa last game namin at sabi ko nga sa mga players ko, we experienced it para lalong tumatag ang character at mental toughness namin. Natuto kami doon."

Magnolia trailed after the first quarter, 16-23, but scored 11 straight points to open the second. The Hotshots held the Batang Pier to only three field goals in the second period to seize a 53-31 halftime lead.
