FRESHMAN guard Terrence Romeo’s first term in his crash course as playmaker and scorer is over with the departure of Sol Mercado, and now the former FEU star is looking forward to a new program in court management with the arrival of Alex Cabagnot.

The six-foot Mercado was shipped by Globalport to on Tuesday to San Miguel Beer for playmaker Cabagnot.

The 5-foot-11 Romeo felt his transition from a go-to-guy at Far Eastern University in the UAAP to a more well-rounded player in the pro ranks has so far been going smoothly with the guidance of Mercado, the Fil-Am combo guard out of Biola University.

“Si Kuya Sol malaki ang naitulong sa akin. Lagi niya pinapalakas loob ko saka isa rin siya sa mga pinagkukuhanan ko ng strategy sa game, like kung kelan da-drive saka tamang timing pumasa,” Romeo confided to Spin.ph after the team’s practice at the Moro Lorenzo gym inside the Ateneo campus.

With Mercado set to be his opponent starting next month at the start of the Commissioner’s Cup, Romeo hopes he could learn some more from Cabagnot, the erstwhile Petron/San Miguel star point guard whose veteran presence is expected to boost the young Globalport franchise.

“Siyempre, marami akong matutunan kay kuya Alex. Pure point guard kasi si kuya Alex,” said Romeo of his new teammate, whom the Batang Pier warmly welcomed on Wednesday in practice, along with Bonbon Custodio.

With a few new faces added, the former UAAP MVP said their immediate task now is to work together as they try to improve on their quarterfinal showing in the Philippine Cup this season.

“Siguro excited din, though di pa namin alam paano (maglaro ng magkakasama). Pero kailangang makuha na naming maglaro sa isa’t isa kasama si kuya Alex at saka import din,” he added.

Romeo, who averaged 14.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists, will be leaving along with the rest of the team for Cebu on Friday as they join the 77th Cebu City Charter Day Cup along with Talk ‘N Text, Alaska and a local Cebu team.
