ANTIPOLO CITY – Rookie Roger Pogoy isn’t about to hesitate taking huge shots for TnT Katropa down the stretch and with the game on the line.
He is after all, licensed to shoot by no less than coach Nash Racela.
And it’s what he actually did when the Cebuano guard delivered in the clutch in the Texters’ thrilling 105-102 win over Rain or Shine in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Sunday night at the Ynares Sports Center.
“Simula naman noong nasama ako sa TnT, alam ko na yung role ko. Kasi nga ang tagal ko ng kasama si coach (Nash),” he said of his former college mentor at Far Eastern University.
Pogoy wen 4-of-9 from the field to finish with 10 points, the last a long two that could have counted as a three-pointer had he not stepped on the three-point line. Nonetheless, the basket broke the game’s final deadlock and gave the Texters a 103-101 lead.
The Cebuano guard said he relied on instinct when he launched the shot that shoved his team in front for good.
“Ano yun, broken play na. Nag-scramble yung depensa, tapos nalibre ako,” he said of the sequence in the final 26 seconds of the match. “Buti na-shoot.”
The shot likewise redeemed Pogoy from a defensive lapse he earlier committed against James Yap, resulting in a three-point play by the Rain or Shine top gun that tied the game at 101-all.
Pogoy however, denied being overwhelmed by Yap, who happens to be his boyhood idol.
“Ginagaya ko nga siya e, yung mga one-hander, one-hander niya,” he said with a smile.
