THE first time Rodney Brondial showed up at the Barako Bull camp for pre-draft practice, not a few Energy players immediately noticed the resemblance to a famous actor that they decided to play a prank on veteran forward Leo Najorda.

    Najorda obviously fell for it.

Eh kamukha. Akala ko si Matt Evans nga," said Najorda, scratching his head.

"Sabi ko pa nga kay boss (team manager) Raffy (Casyao), 'Ang galing pala maglaro ni Matt Evans,'" added Najorda who can only laugh when he realized his mistake. "Pambihira, hindi pala siya yun."

But for Brondial, being mistaken for the 'Pure Love' TV series star is no longer new to him.

Kahit nung nasa Adamson pa po ako," he said.

Asked if he has met his lookalike in person, Brondial said yes.

But more than anything else, Brondial, one of the rookie hopefuls in Sunday's PBA draft, said he wants to etch his own identity in basketball.

"Excited na po ako sa draft mamaya. Saka kinakabahan nga po akong lalo habang papalapit ang draft," he said.

"Pero tingin ko naman po naipakita ko ang kakayahan ko para mapansin ng mga teams," said Brondial who received invitations to practice with Ginebra (twice), Barako Bull (twice) and once with Rain or Shine and San Mig.

Brondial vows to become a younger version of Marc Pingris.

Brondial's former mentor at Adamson, now San Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria, is optimistic that his discovery in a barangay league in Quezon city will prove that he's more than just good looks.

"May future 'yang bata na 'yan. Masipag, matapang at ma-hussle. May pwesto sa PBA ang laro nyan," said Austria, who regrets not having a chance to tab Brondial as San Miguel has no first-round pick.
