Jaworski calls on PBA to institutionalize rules on selection of future 'Greatest Players' lists

    Apr 8, 2015

BASKETBALL legend Robert  Jaworski Sr. is bidding to institutionalize certain rules for the selection of future inductees to the PBA Greatest Players’ list.

Jaworski made the appeal in order to avoid a repetition of the public outcry that preceded the inclusion of 15 names as part of the league’s 40 Greatest Players, who were feted in formal rites on Wednesday night at the Newport Performing Arts Theater Resorts World Manila to celebrate the PBA 40th year.

“So that it (netizens’ negative criticism on the 40 Greatest Players list) doesn’t happen again, I personally think we (selection panel) have to sit down and improve certain rules that must be institutionalized in certain aspects so we could minimize whatever these questions are,” Jaworski told mediamen.

Philippine basketball’s living legend however, made no suggestions as to what specific criteria should be included in the selection process.

The 69-year-old former Senator was part of the selection panel which named the 15 new additions to the league’s ‘Greatest’ list.

The other members of the panel include former Senator and player Freddie Webb, league chairman Pato Gregorio, vice-chairman Robert Non, PBA Press Corps president Barry Pascua, columnist Quinito Henson, and Cavite Rep. Elpidio Barzaga.

The list however, didn’t sit well with basketball fans, who felt numerous players who were more deserving were left out, among them were Nelson Asaytono, the late Arnie Tuadles, Abe King, Olsen Racela, Bong Hawkins, Jeff Cariaso and even Danny Seigle.

Jaworski said he completely understands the people’s sentiment, saying the thoughts and opinions of netizens and basketball aficionados could greatly help the next selection panel.

“Everybody can be a great help to make everything worthwhile by listening to the thoughts of those who know what it (criteria) is to be there,” he stressed.

“Sabi ko nga, ayusin kung anong elemento at sino ang dapat mag kunsidera, then let it be institutionalized, then i-record, yung puwede mong pag-aralan.”

But Jaworski said it is “not too late” to include the other former league legends in future selection.

“We must all learn that it’s not too late, but I think the specific elements and factors for consideration are to be well studied in the light of the fact that we want this (selection process) institutionalized,” he added.
