Robert Jaworski believes 'triangle' and run-and-gun game can go well together for Ginebra

ROBERT 'Sonny' Jaworski believes the triangle offense fits the rejigged Barangay Ginebra Kings in their bid to regain lost glory in the PBA.

But the former Ginebra great feels the Kings could even be more successful if the proven system instilled by new coach Jeff Cariaso would be combined with the run-and-gun offense the Kings had long been known for.

“I think it’s a combination of both (systems) because you got shooters and you got big men that can run,” Jaworski told Spin.ph on Monday after he graced the travelling exhibit celebrating Ginebra San Miguel’s 180^th anniversary at SMC's head office in Ortigas.

“You got a lot of good people there that can help you make the dream happen,” the former league MVP added of the Kings, who are gearing up for another do-or-die playoff run in the Governors’ Cup. “They have what it takes to make it.”

“But they got to give a little more than what they have,” the 68-year-old Jaworski was quick to add, saying all players must prove they deserve their place in the rotation and show qualities not reflected in the statistics.

“Because there’s a competition there, meaning there are guys that are ready to try and win, so you got to go beyond that skill they have,” said the man they call the Living Legend.

Ultimately, Jaworski believes it also takes luck, more than the system, that will get the Kings their first championship since 2008.

“Let’s face it: you can’t develop a team overnight, but you can try,” the Hall of Famer said of the Kings, who renew their quest in the quarterfinals, where their never-say-die spirit is expected to be in full affect anew as they are in a twice-to-win scenario against either sister team San Miguel Beer or Alaska.

One organization, though, that has been successful for almost two centuries is the Ginebra brand itself, which Jaworski congratulated.

“There is no secret to being a one hundred eighty-year-old and still going stronger (organization) other than giving your darn best for the vision of the company.”
