RK Ilagan sparks big finishing kick as Blackwater topples Phoenix

Bossing settle a score against group leader Fuelmasters, snap three-game slump

BLACKWATER snapped a three-game losing streak, coming from behind to beat group leader Phoenix Super LPG, 106-100, on Wednesday in the PBA 50th Season Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Bossing trailed by as many as 15 points and by nine, 86-77, entering the fourth quarter. But they limited the Fuelmasters to just 14 points in the final quarter and RK Ilagan sparked a big finishing kick to wrap up the much-needed victory.

Blackwater rode the efforts of Kentrell Barkley and Sedrick Barefield to even its win-loss record to 3-3. Phoenix Super LPG fell to 4-2 after failing to sweep the Bossing in the group stage.

Barkley had 34 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks, and Barefield had 26 points on 11-of-24 shooting from the field to bounce back from his 10-point showing against Phoenix in their first-round encounter, 102-93.

RK Ilagan added 15 points including a three-pointer that got Blackwater ahead for good, 95-93. He also had a steal and a lay-up to extend the lead to 99-93.

    Blackwater trailed, 83-68, in the third quarter after being outscored, 27-15, by the Fuelmasters.

    “The guys, they never stopped playing,” Blackwater coach Pat Aquino said. “Everybody helped out. We contained them. We played good defense.”

    BJ Johnson had 45 points for Phoenix Super LPG but his team shot just 5-of-20 from the field in the fourth quarter.
