LESS than two weeks before the start of the PBA’s 40th season, league commissioner Chito Salud cracked the whip by handing out fines totalling P140,000 for a fight that marred the preseason match between Rain or Shine and NLEX last September 26 at the Meralco gym.
After a thorough review of the video sent by head of referee Boy Cruz, Salud slapped a P40,000 fine each on NLEX big man Enrico Villanueva and Rain or Shine guard Ryan Arana, protagonists in the fistfight after colliding in mid-air late in the first quarter.
“For throwing the ball at Enrico Villanueva that instigated the fight that ensued between them, Ryan Araña is fined the amount of P40,000,” Salud said in an official statement on Wednesday.
“For throwing the first punch and engaging Ryan Araña in a fight, Enrico Villanueva is fined the sum of P40,000,” he added.
Rain or Shine forward Jervy Cruz didn’t escape the penalty after being caught on camera kicking Villanueva during the scuffle. The 6-4 Cruz was likewise slapped with a P40,000 fine.
Meantime, Rain or Shine rookie Jericho Cruz was hit with a P20,000 fine for throwing the ball at the 6-5 Villanueva during the ensuing commotion.
