Del Rosario plays down coaching takeover from Cone in Ginebra win

Richard del Rosario deflects credit to Tim Cone, Kings for Ginebra comeback win
    May 26, 2019

BARANGAY Ginebra lead assistant Richard Del Rosario deflected the credit to the Kings for turning things around in the second half that led to a 110-95 comeback win against Meralco in Sunday night’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“It’s really the players’ effort that proved to be the difference here in the second half,” said Del Rosario, who was allowed by head coach Tim Cone to call the shots for the team from time to time starting the third quarter following a flat first half the Kings had.

“It’s just really the players changing their attitude of being more aggressive.”

Del Rosario disclosed Cone gave out an impassioned speech at the half after the defending champion played without energy in the first two quarters that saw the Kings trail the Bolts by as many as 35-20.

And in his effort to have the Kings hear ‘a new voice,’ Cone talked out to Del Rosario for him to call most of the shots in the second half.

“Sinabi niya (Cone) lang sa akin before the start (of the second half) because I was shouting out instructions, ‘sige ikaw na muna ang tumayo.’”

That kicked off a fiery Ginebra rally in which it outscored Meralco, 39-17, in the third quarter to turn the game around and take an 82-71 lead with them entering the fourth.

“Sinubukan kong umupo kasi nahiya ako ang tagal ko nang nakatayo, pero sabi niya (Cone), ‘sige tuloy mo lang,’” Del Rosario disclosed.

When everything was done and over, Cone paid tribute to his players, but reserved the biggest complement to Del Rosario and the entire Ginebra coaching staff.

“I shouldn’t be the one talking to you. Richard did the most of the talking and coaching in the second half. The players responded and I couldn’t be prouder,” he said.

Still, Del Rosario said it was Cone who had a hand in guiding the Kings to their first victory in the conference after losing to Blackwater in their debut game.

“Timeout it was him, substitutions. But were working together. It wasn’t really me,” he added.

“He gave me the credit pero ganyan naman yan.”
