SAN Miguel pounded an import-less Blackwater side, 127-106, to finally break into the win column of the PBA Commissioner's Cup on Friday night.
With no Alex Stepheson to challenge him down low, Charles Rhodes was a dominant presence inside for the Beermen by scoring 32 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, and blocking five shots in the runaway victory.
It was the first win for the Beermen, who lost their first two games of the conference after winning a fifth straight Philippine Cup championship.
Stepheson was not around at the Mall of Asia Arena as he left for the U.S. on the same day to seek medical treatment.
A statement coming from the team said Stepheson suffered from a bum stomach. The import however, is set to come back on Thursday.
"Ke may import yan o wala, tatanggapin namin ito ng maluwag. Panalo yan, e," said winning coach Leo Austria.
The Beermen were also without injured key players Terrence Romeo and Arwind Santos, but the team wasn't lacking in firepower as four others outside of Jones also finished in double figures.
Marcio Lassiter scored a conference-high 29 points while going 9-of-16 from three-point range. Alex Cabagnot added 19 points, while June Mar Fajardo and Von Pessumal had 12 each for San Miguel, which broke away from the Elite following a sizzling second-quarter run anchored by Pessumal.
San Miguel led by as many as 21 points and finished with an impressive 18-of-41 shooting from three-point range.
Lassiter took over in the fourth quarter by firing 21 points as he went 7-of-11 from downtown in that stretch.
Blackwater, who was led by the 23 points of rookie Bobby Ray Parks, fell to a 5-2 record and relinquished the lead to idle NorthPort (5-1).
