Reyes twits Aguilar over trade wish, advises former player to return

    Jan 21, 2013

NATIONAL coach Chot Reyes on Monday took to social networking site Twitter to air his take on Japeth Aguilar’s expressed wish to be traded by Talk 'N Text, stressing the move "smacks of selfishness."

The 6-foot-9 former Western Kentucky back-up center earlier bared to Spin.ph, through his Philippine agent Marvin Espiritu, that he wants out of Talk `N Text, saying he feels he can only have the playing time he needs to shine if the PLDT franchise sends him to another team.

Aguilar is still in the US and Espiritu said he plans to return only after the trade deal has been finalized.

In a series of tweets, Reyes, who coached Aguilar for three years at Talk 'N Text, questioned Aguilar’s move to go public with his trade demand, stressing that `playing time is earned, not demanded.’

“I read an article bout u @SPIN.ph. Dunno if these are ur thoughts but fr a 20-yr vet in this industry: It's not good to publicly demand to be traded, esp due to playing time, ESP when ur team just won d title. This smacks of selfishness,” tweeted through his account @coachchot.

Aguilar’s trade demand comes at a time when the Tropang Texters just won the Philippine Cup championship for a third straight season under Norman Black – Japeth’s former college mentor at Ateneo.

His contract with the team has already expired but the franchise still holds the signing rights on Aguilar, who has been in the US since August as he pursued his dream to play in the NBA.

Reyes said if Aguilar wants more playing time, he should not have gone to the US to take a shot at the NBA D-League.

At the same time, the multi-titled champion coach reminded Japeth that he averaged 20 minutes a game during last year’s All-Filipino Cup when he was still calling the shots for Talk `N Text.

“If u really want to play, why go to NBA/NBDL? U think u can play a lot there? U played 20mins/g in ur last AllFil stint. This not enough?

“Son,playing time is EARNED,not demanded/expected.Wanna play at crunchtime? Work SOHARD ur coach cnt afford 2 sit u. If he does, work anyway!” Reyes tweeted prior to departing for Hong Kong on Monday afternoon with Gilas Pilipinas for the 19th Super Kung Sheung Cup International Basketball Invitational Championship.

Reyes also tempered his rant with "fatherly advice" as he repeatedly addressed Aguilar "son." He also called the former Ateneo player the "most physically gifted Pinoy baller ever."

He continued: “U are d most physically gifted Pinoy baller EVER. But why dint u play at WKentucky? At Gilas? In NBDL? It's d coaches fault? Think bout it.”

Aguilar also played under Reyes in the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas team where the five-time PBA Coach of the Year served as assistant to Rajko Toroman. Reyes tried many times to convince Toroman in the past to give Aguilar the needed playing time and exposure with the national team.

In the end, the national coach advised Aguilar to return to the country and prove his worth against the country’s best basketball players.

“I have nothing to gain whatever u decide cept I want whats best 4 u. Come home son.Make ur name here.THIS is where u belong," he said.

“So cmon, play 8 or 48 mins, get ur ass kicked, dunk on somebody - but do it HERE. And know whatever happens, I will be behind u always.”
