AIR21 big man Rob Reyes was fined P10,000 and slapped with a flagrant foul penalty 1 for hitting and taunting Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva during their PBA Philippine Cup game Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
League commissioner Chito Salud castigated Reyes after summoning him in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, where the Express are set to play the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Saturday night.
Reyes was caught hitting Abueva square in the face during a mad scramble for the ball during the waning minutes of the game which Air21 won, 104-103.
No foul was called during the play.
Referee Jimmy Mariano, who had the primary area of jurisdiction to make a call on the particular play, had since been slapped with a four game-day suspension.
Alaska management and coaching staff led by mentor Luigi Trillo went to the PBA office Thursday and had an audience with Salud regarding the matter.
“While the illegal acts escaped the attention of game officials resulting in a non-call, I am exericsing the Commissioner's authority to sanction players who upon playback and review, are deemed to have committed a dangerous play or a rough and unsporstmanlike tactic that was undetected in the course of the game,” said Salud in a statement.
The commissioner also warned the other players to `refrain from needlessly exposing other players, along with themselves, to serious injury and undue hurt thru intentional and blatantly dirty and rough plays.’
“This will invariably be met with penalties and sanctions from my office,” he added.
