THE PBA has suspended referee Rey Yante for the rest of the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs for a “clear judgment error” late in the semifinal game between Rain or Shine and Meralco on Sunday night.
The league issued a short statement on Monday saying the official made a mistake at the two-minute, 30-second mark of the four quarter in a play where the Bolts’ Cliff Hodge blocked Jonathan Uyloan’s layup attempt.
Instead of letting the ball stay with the Elasto Painters, Yante, who was in front of the play when it happened, awarded the possession to the Bolts, who were down, 78-89, and in a middle of a comeback.
League commissioner Chito Salud also confirmed the news in a text message to Spin.ph.
Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao later accused Yante of being a “barefaced liar” and for “inventing” calls after the official slapped a technical foul on the fiery mentor for profane language.
Guiao said he will request that Yante be barred from officiating in any of ROS’ games.
It seems his request was granted, although indirectly.
Yante is just the latest referee to be slapped a lengthy suspension. On April 1, referee Art Herrera was slapped with a five-game ban for an 'error in judgment' in Game One of the Meralco-Rain or Shine series.
On March 29, another referee was suspended for the rest of the conference after another error late in Rain or Shine's quarterfinal win over Ginebra.
