CALASIAO, Pangasinan – Rey Guevarra of Phoenix Pulse tied a record after winning his fifth Slam Dunk contest on Friday in the PBA All-Star Weekend at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Pangasinan.
Guevarra withstood a gutsy challenge from Renz Palma of Blackwater in the dunk-off to tie Nino Canaleta for the most number of Slam Dunk titles in the side event serving as appetizer to the All-Star Game.
The former Letran player did just enough in the dunk-off to make history as Palma missed attempts that could've piled the pressure on Guevarra.
Palma matched Guevarra's perfect 50 points in his first dunk, but an ambitious attempt that had Beau Belga throwing him a lob pass from the lower box section of the Calasiao Sports Complex fell flat.
Guevarra then wrapped up the title with a tomahawk dunk performed with the help of Phoenix teammates.
Rookie CJ Perez of Columbian and Lervin Flores of NorthPort also participated in the Slam Dunk contest but failed to reach the finals.
