Resolute Meralco import plays through the pain

    Apr 19, 2013
"I can sit out if I want to but it's turning my back on my team. I'm not going to do that. They're not turning their back on me so I'm not going to do that to them," says Meralco import Eric Dawson. Jerome Ascano

ERIC Dawson’s desire to win simply can’t be outweighed by any injury.

Despite nursing a left knee injury, the Meralco import was a picture of determination on Friday night, leading the Bolts to an 88-85 win over San Mig Coffee in Game One of their quarterfinals series in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The former NBA player, who once suited up for the San Antonio Spurs, came up with an all-around performance as he breached the pain barrier, highlighted by a double-double of 25 points and 18 rebounds, on top of four assists and two steals.

"I want to play," he said. "I can sit out if I want to but it's turning my back on my team. I'm not going to do that. They're not turning their back on me so I'm not going to do that to them."

Dawson insists he was hardly affected by the injury he suffered in the last game of the eliminations against Rain or Shine

"I'm fine," said the 6-foot-8 import with a wide smile on his face before turning serious. "The injury is not a concern to me. I just want to win that's all.”

“Injury is part of basketball. In any sport you're going to get hurt it's on you as a player to play through the pain and that's what I'm doing," he added.

Despite having a 1-0 advantage over the Mixers in their best-of-three series, Dawson knows they should not get overconfident as he expects San Mig Coffee to bounce back on Sunday.

"Short series is hard. You try to get Game One, which we did tonight," he said. "San Mig Coffee is a good team so we know they will come out with some fire on Sunday so it's going to be a battle."
