BLACKWATER began its buildup a month before the start of the season-opening PBA Governors Cup by shipping out seldom-used gunner Alex Nuyles for KIA Motors forward Reil Cervantes.
The deal, which was approved just before the end of Monday’s office hours, will bring an additional scoring punch for the Elite who only have two wins to show in their maiden season in the pro league.
“One-on-one lang siya na trade,” Blackwater alternate governor Wilbert Loa told Spin.ph on Tuesday.
“Gusto na siya dati pa ni coach Leo (Isaac), pero naunahan lang kami ng KIA sa kanya sa dispersal draft kasi naging player na namin siya before.”
The 6-foot-4 Cervantes, a rugged inside player who can shoot from long range, is averaging 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds for KIA in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Selected ninth overall by Barangay Ginebra in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft, Cervantes never found his place in the crowded Gin Kings frontline.
He eventually returned to the PBA D-League where he helped Big Chill to a runner-up finish in the Aspirants Cup in 2014, before playing one conference for Blackwater in the Foundations Cup.
On the other hand, Nuyles, an energetic shooting guard, only played four games for the Elite in the mid-season conference, averaging just 3.5 points and 1.0 rebound in 9.2 minutes.
The former Adamson Falcon can bring in additional firepower for the Carnival, who are set to bring back hulking Peter John Ramos as their import in the Governors Cup.
