RANIDEL de Ocampo scored a season-high 28 points while Larry Fonacier hit a dagger three-pointer in the endgame as Talk 'N Text won its sixth successive game in the PBA Commissioner's Cup at the expense of Barangay Ginebra, 94-87, on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
De Ocampo went 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point arc and made one of the biggest shots for Talk 'N Text in the endgame, his jumper inside the lane a momentum killer after Ginebra battled back from a double-digit deficit to pull within six points, 81-87, with over three minutes left.
His basket all but knocked the wind off the sails of Ginebra, which was also left to rue a blunder by the referees when they awarded Talk 'N Text possession after a rebound battle where Ryan Reyes clearly touched the ball last.
The Gin Kings were able to mount a last-ditch rally, clawing back to within four points at 85-89 after LA Tenorio went coast to coast for a layup with 51 seconds remaining.
Fonacier, however, was there to save the day for Talk 'N Text as he buried a clutch three-pointer from right infront the Texters' bench that sent Ginebra reeling to its third loss in five games.
Talk ‘N Text coach Norman Black admitted possession should have been awarded to Ginebra after the Reyes play, though he added that it’s just one call in the game.
“Well I saw it and I think it should have been their (Gin Kings) ball. But that was one call the entire game and we should go back in the game,” Black said. “Those (wrong calls) are breaks of the game. It’s just one call in the entire game. It happens a lot.”
Import Richard Howell added 19 points, 23 rebounds and two blocks for the Tropang Texters while Jason Castro, Reyes and Fonacier each scored 10 points or more in a balanced scoring attack.
Leon Rodgers led the Gin Kings with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while Mark Caguioa had his second straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Mac Baracael added 13, but was held scoreless in the entire second half.
