TALK ‘N Text drew desirable production from its import to pass a tough test in San Miguel Beer, 103-97, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
After a sub-par debut that saw him get limited to 13 points and two rebounds, Rodney Carney pumped in 28 points and grabbed seven boards to spearhead the Tropang Texters to their fourth win in five games for a share of second spot with Air21 and San Mig Coffee and just behind unbeaten leader Barangay Ginebra.
The locals also delivered as backcourt partners Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag buried the key baskets in crunch time to keep the Beermen at bay.
“We got what we wanted from our import, and Jimmy hit some crucial shots down the stretch, while Jayson played spectacular as usual,” Texters coach Norman Black said.
After Carney scored his total output in the first three quarters, the guards took over in the payoff period where Alapag and Castro combined for 20 of the Tropang Texters’ 27 points.
Reggie Williams sustained his offensive brilliance for San Miguel with 33 points, including four triples, on top of 10 assists and two steals in 44 minutes, but the former NBA standout missed two contested shots that could’ve nudged the Beermen closer.
Instead, the powerhouse squad absorbed only a second loss in five games.
Williams made two free throws that cut the deficit to two, 97-99, before the Tropang Texters retaliated with four charities of their own courtesy of Ranidel de Ocampo and Castro to seal the deal.
