ANTIPOLO – Reaching uncharted territory was enough motivation for RR Garcia to give San Miguel Beer a huge lift in its 98-91 win over Rain or Shine in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
Getting only as far as the quarterfinals in his first three seasons in the league, the spitfire combo guard finally got over the hump on Sunday after pumping in 25 points built around five three-pointers in just 26 minutes off the bench to show the E-Painters the door.
“First time ko mag-semis,” Garcia admitted. “At sabi ni coach, may history ang San Miguel na natatalo sa first game pag twice to beat. Pinatunayan namin na ‘di na mauulit.”
“Sa akin, excited ako na makapasok sa semis,” he added. “Mas tataasan ko pa yung i-contribute ko sa team. Di kami aasa na hanggang doon na lang. Sa practice pa lang, kailangan mag-extra at ‘di makuntento.”
His extra work, particularly on his outside shots, has been paying off. Except for his last game against TNT Katropa where he missed his two treys, Garcia has knocked down six of his 11 attempts from beyond the arc in the previous two outings.
The former UAAP MVP out of Far Eastern University added five more on Sunday, providing the biggest spark among the reserves.
“Kailangan mag-step up kasi di lang yung first group ang aasahan namin,” Garcia said. “Dapat pati second group, makatulong para manalo yung team.”
“Pag pasok namin dapat, ibigay namin lahat,” he added.
