TNT coach Bong Ravena lauded the effort of RR Pogoy to play through injury on Monday in the PBA Philippine Cup bubble.
Pogoy was a gametime decision in the Tropang GIGA’s contest against Phoenix Super LPG. Not only did he play through an ankle injury, he thrived with pain.
Pogoy scored 20 of his 30 points in the second half as the momentum shifted to the Tropang GIGA in the second half on their way to a 110-91 win. It was Pogoy’s second game where he exploded on offense following his 45-point performance in the first game.
“We call him ‘The Wolverine’,” said Ravena after the match. “For us coaches, we supposed to let him rest but this kid really wants to play. We are just lucky to have players like that. All heart.”
Pogoy suffered a sprained right ankle in TNT’s clash against San Miguel after he stepped on Gelo Alolino’s foot following a jumper. Pogoy accepted Alolino’s apology for the landing spot foul.
The former Far Eastern University standout couldn't get going right away. Although aggressive with his shots, Pogoy only made 4 of his 11 shots at the half and had 10 points. He got himself going in the third, hitting two triples and had 10 in the third that saw TNT pull away, 30-14, in the period.
Ravena said Pogoy was still doubtful for the game against the Fuel Masters until the warm-ups.
“Inoobserbahan pa rin namin kung paano pakiramdam niya, kung kaya ba niya. Pero kanina, nagwa-warm-up bago pa lang mag-shootaround. Okay naman siya. Puwede raw siya maglaro, pinalaro na rin namin,” said Ravena.
