Ranidel de Ocampo on track for Finals MVP award, but quick to deflect credit

    Apr 25, 2015

WITH a chance to close out a tough Rain or Shine side, Talk ‘N Text forward Ranidel de Ocampo has urged his teammates to come out with the killer instinct come Game Six on Sunday.

Anything less and the Texters will be flirting with disaster, he warned.

“Alam namin ang Rain or Shine, babalik at babalik yan eh," said de Ocampo after Talk ‘N Text took a 3-2 lead in the PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals following its 103-94 win on Friday night.

"So kailangan, pagdating ng Game Six, may championship mentality at may killer instinct na kami,” he added.

Teammate Jayson Castro has been big all conference long because of his improved outside shooting and playmaking, but one can’t overlook the 6-foot-5 de Ocampo’s contributions in the Finals.

The Gilas Pilipinas mainstay tossed in a career-high 33 points in the Tropang Texters' 99-92 win in Game Four before banging in 27 in the Game Five victory that moved the team to the verge of a seventh league championship.

De Ocampo, though, was quick to deflect the credit, saying Castro makes it easier for them to score because of his playmaking and phenomenal shooting.

“Siguro malaking bagay din na tumitingin si Jayson sa mga kakampi niya. Nabibigyan niya kami ng magandang tira kaya nag-improve din ang percentage namin ni Ivan (Johnson),” noted De Ocampo.

With Castro’s effective playmaking, De Ocampo and Johnson combined for five three-pointers in the second half, which enabled the Tropang Texters to enjoy leads of as big as 20 points midway through the third quarter.

The 33-year-old De Ocampo shot 11-of-19 from the floor overall, while Johnson finished 10-of-16.

Even Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao took note of Talk ‘N Text’s efficient shooting in Game Five, saying guys like De Ocampo, Johnson and Castro were making contested shots.

“They just shot the ball well. There were times on certain occasions, we were making the effort, challenging their shots, but they were still making them,” said Guiao.
