TOO bad, Rain or Shine didn’t play what Yeng Guiao described as not `their regular game’ on the day the fiery coach celebrated his 56th birthday.
Guiao lamented how the Elasto Painters turned the ball over during the critical moment of the fourth period that eventually led to the team’s 112-107 downfall to San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday.
The loss dropped the Painters to 1-2 overall.
Although Guiao was happy with the way the team bounced back from a 16-point third quarter deficit by taking a 101-98 lead with four minutes to go behind import Alex McLean’s three-point shot, two crucial turnovers by the Elasto Painters eventually hastened their downfall.
“Maganda sana yung laro ano. We just had some crucial turnovers. That’s really the story of the game. We lost the game on turnovers, at a crucial time when we had recovered from a bad third quarter,” Guiao told sports scribes after the game.
The mentor who is also congressman from the first district of Pampanga, noted that Rain or Shine’s normal turnover average per game is just 13.
But on a night when they could have beaten the Beermen again right in their first meeting in the mid-season conference, the usually cool Elasto Painters suddenly crumbled to pressure.
“It’s very unusual for us to have 19 turnovers. We average below 13 turnovers. Even in the (Philippine Cup) Finals, when the pressure was there, we didn’t turn over more than 13 times in a game,” he said.
“But it happens. It’s not our regular game.”
With only one win to show in the shortened elimination round format, Guiao said he remains hopeful that soon, Rain or Shine would be able to catch fire and at least go up to a better placing in the standings as ballclubs start jockeying for playoff spots.
“It’s also good that as long you don’t get eliminated, you have a chance to win this conference. And if we cannot win early, I hope we can win late and still make it in time to the semis and the playoffs,” he said.
"Iyun lang naman ang maganda sa format, you can be a late bloomer this conference.”
Rain or Shine tries to bounce back from the stinging defeat to the Beermen when it faces San Mig Super Coffee in the main game on Saturday.
