JUST two days after authoring an amazing comeback in its PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals showdown against San Miguel, Rain or Shine could be looking to pull off another escape act on Tuesday.
Coach Yeng Guiao is expected to miss Game Two of the best-of-five series at the Araneta Coliseum as he will be attending a candidates' debate in his home province of Pampanga in relation to his reelection bid as congressman in the province’s first district.
“I have to grace a candidates’ forum sa district namin. Parang presidential debate siya. Ang problema, it’s scheduled at 5 p.m. tapos 7 p.m. `yung laro. Kaya baka hindi ako makapag-coach,” said the Elasto Painters mentor.
Guiao presided over the filing of a petition for Mandamus with the Supreme Court against the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office for the agencies’ failure to honor their obligation of remitting before the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Shortly after, he went straight to Pampanga along with his chief of staff Ramon Navarra Jr. and legal counsel Atty. Avelino ‘Jun’ Guzman Jr.
“Eto, papunta na nga kami ng Pampanga,” said Guiao.
The Elasto Painters scored a 98-94 win over the Beermen in the opener of their semis series, erasing an 18-point deficit in the first half.
Top deputy Caloy Garcia is set to call the shots for the Painters.
The Rain or Shine coach missed the first quarter of Game Six of the team’s Philippine Cup semifinals series against the same San Miguel side after arriving late at the Big Dome due to traffic.
Garcia also called the shots briefly for the Elasto Painters as heavy traffic forced Guiao to walk from Ayala Ave. in Makati to Cubao at the heart of Quezon City just to make it to the game.
Although he’s not going to walk his way to the game this time, the fiery mentor said he’ll try his best to be at the game even at the last-minute, time permitting.
“Subukan nating humabol,” added Guiao.
