Rain or Shine sends Alas to Talk 'N Text, Canaleta goes to NLEX in three-team trade

    Sep 23, 2014

RAIN or Shine decided to part ways with rookie guard Kevin Alas in a three-team trade that also involved Talk ‘N Text and its sister team NLEX in the deal on Tuesday.

Alas, the six-foot guard out of Letran who Rain or Shine selected as its second overall pick in last month’s draft, was shipped to Talk ‘N Text in exchange for veteran forward Nino Canaleta.

The Elasto Painters then shipped the 6-foot-6 Canaleta to NLEX in exchange for the Road Warriors’ first-round pick in the 2015 draft.

“From the very beginning, Alas is our insurance in case di mag-sign si Paul. Hindi naman sikreto yun,” Guiao said on Tuesday after Rain or Shine beat Kia Motors, 92-87 in their preseason game at the Nega Sports Center in San Juan.

“Now that we’ve signed Paul (Lee), marami na kaming guards,” he added.

The fiery Rain or Shine mentor said considering the loaded guard rotation they have that included Chris Tiu, Gabe Norwood, Ryan Arana, Jeric Teng, TY Tang and Jonathan Uyloan, it would be unfair for rookies like Alas not to be able to showcase his talent in the PBA.

“It would be very difficult to let him (Alas) go, but it would also be unfair kasi if there’s a better opportunity (for Alas) to shine sa ibang team,” explained Guiao.

“Eh instead of playing behind Paul, playing behind Gabe, playing behind Ryan and playing behind Chris Tiu, and if there’s an opportunity where he can display his talent, why not (trade him)?” he added.

Acquiring NLEX’s draft pick gives Rain or Shine an opportunity to dip its hand on the 2015 batch of rookies that could possibly include Fil-Tongan big man Moala Tautuaa, Bobby Ray Parks and La Salle big man Norbert Torres.

The trade was the final product of a deal first reported by Spin.ph on Monday that started with Jay Washington moving from GlobalPort to Talk 'N Text along with NLEX rookie Matt Rosser.

However, it is not known if Talk 'N Text is the final destination of Washington since the Texters are way over the limit of five active Fil-foreign players in their lineup.
