RAIN or Shine snapped a two-game losing skid after defeating Alaska, 86-84, on Saturday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Elastopainters answered the call of head coach Caloy Garcia for the locals to step up as they picked up the with Denzel Bowles missing the entire second half due to an injury.
With the victory, the Elastopainters improved their card to 4-5, sharing sixth place with Phoenix Pulse in a tight race in the middle of the team standings.
Bowles still topscored for Rain or Shine with 16 points, but Mark Borboran and Javee Mocon picked up the slack from their after the absence of their import in the second half.
“It’s a huge win for us and also a big loss because we don’t know the status of Denzel right now,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia.
The loss in the Petron Saturday Special match was the Aces’ fourth straight defeat to fall to 4-6.
Borboran had seven of his 11 points in a fourth-quarter run that put Rain or Shine ahead, 81-73. The Aces answered with five straight points, but Ed Daquioag answered with a triple with 34.4 seconds left for an 84-78 lead.
Banchero cut the deficit to three, and Alaska forced a turnover on the next plays. But Diamon Simpson missed a putback to end Alaska’s chances of winning the match.
Mocon had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Rey Nambatac had 10 points for the Elastopainters.
Banchero had 24 points and nine assists, as Simpson produced 22 points and 23 rebounds for the struggling Aces.
