RAIN or Shine continued to flaunt its depth as it trampled Mahindra, 108-94, on Sunday to gain the early lead in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Even without injured star Paul Lee, the Elasto Painters drew plenty of firepower with nine players scoring at least seven points as they turned the game around after trailing early once again to notch a second straight win.
“We still struggled in the first half, but we were able to recover,” Painters coach Yeng Guiao said. “But we cannot keep doing that. We have to have strong start.”
Thrust into the starting lineup after a lackluster pro debut, Maverick Ahanmisi shook off rookie jitters as he delivered a team-high-tying 14 points, the same output as JR Quinahan, who sustained his fine play off the bench.
Quinahan missed just one of his seven shots and added five boards in just 21 minutes.
Don Trollano also bounced back from a sub-par debut, tallying eight points, four assists, and three boards in 20 minutes.
Karl Dehesa waxed hot with 20 points built around four three-pointers in a losing effort for the Enforcers, who had something to cheer about when playing-coach Manny Pacquiao scored his first field goal of his PBA career in the first half.
The Painters, like in their opening game against Star, trailed by double digits early in the first quarter, before clawing back starting in the second quarter where they took the lead, which grew to as many as 22 points.
The Painters looked so flawless in the second half that they ended up making 38-of-68 of their shots for a blistering 57 percent.
