TWO malnourished heavyweights aim to regain their fighting form as the PBA Governors’ Cup goes to Bacolod City on Saturday.
Talk ‘N Text and Rain or Shine face off in a rematch of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals as they try to pump life into their respective playoff bids in the season-ending conference at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
Tipoff of the featured weekly road game is at 5 p.m.
Both in tip-top shape during the grueling best-of-seven championship series in the midseason tournament that went to the limit, the Tropang Texters and the Elasto Painters have been struggling as of late.
The Elasto Painters, particularly, are in uncharted waters as they are stuck in second to last in the 12-team standings after losing four of their first six games.
“When you’re drowning, you just try to cling to anything that can give you some buoyancy,” Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said.
The confidence-booster came in the form of a 123-85 blowout over Blackwater last Wednesday, although the Elasto Painters are still in danger of missing the postseason for the first time in 10 conferences.
But Guiao is hoping the Elasto Painters can draw motivation from the rut they are stuck into.
“Sometimes, something like this needs to happen to wake you up,” said the multi-titled mentor, who now has a full-strength squad at his disposal with the return of Jeff Chan and Raymond Almazan.
“We’re hoping, with a complete lineup, we can get back to being competitive again.”
The Tropang Texters are in a much better position in the middle of the pack with an even 3-3 win-loss card.
But the Commissioner’s Cup champions likewise seek to get back to their groove following a recent slump that saw them lose their last two games where they allowed their opponents to score an average of 121 points.
"We have to defend a lot better than we are doing," Tropang Texters coach Jong Uichico said on Friday.
“Yun yung nagpa-champion sa amin—yung defense namin,” TNT star Jayson Castro said after his team surrendered a 119-85 decision at the hands of sister team Meralco last Tuesday. “Once maganda yung defense namin, yung offense, nandun na.”
