GLOBALPORT coach Pido Jarencio may be hoping for a reunion with his former players at University of Santo Tomas, but Rain or Shine was quick to put its foot down in as far as rookie guard Jeric Teng is concerned.
Just hours after Jarencio hinted at possible changes in his lineup after a 0-6 start to his debut campaign as Batang Pier coach in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, Rain or Shine team manager Boy Lapid told Spin.ph there are no plans whatsover to trade Teng.
Lapid said Teng, who the Elasto Painters tabbed in the second round of this season's rookie draft, is not only a promising player but also happens to be one of the biggest draws of the team.
“Hindi namin ite-trade si Jeric. Wala kaming plano,” said the Rain or Shine official.
Teng was one of the biggest stars who played at University of Santo Tomas under Jarencio, who led the Tigers to a championship and three finals appearances and said on Monday that it would be ideal if he can get some of his former players onboard.
Aside from Teng, Dylan Ababou (Ginebra), Jeric Fortuna (Barako Bull), Jervy Cruz (Rain or Shine), and Jojo Duncil (San Miguel Beer) also played under Jarencio during his seven-year stint as head coach of the Tigers.
Lapid acknowledged Teng also acts as a marketing ambassador for Rain or Shine paint brands.
“Sila ni Chris Tiu, pareho silang mukha ng team. Sila ang pang marketing namin. Isa sila sa mga ginagamit namin pang promote, syempre with the rest of the team,” said the longtime Asian Coatings franchise executive.
The team manager also bared the decision regarding player movements rests on head coach Yeng Guiao.
“Wala pang sinasabi si coach Yeng, so ibig sabihin wala kaming galaw,” said Lapid. “Saka hindi uri ni coach Yeng yung mag-gagalaw ng mag-gagalaw ng lineup .. Saka siya nasusunod. Sa ngayon wala pa siyang binabanggit, so wala talagang pinag-iisipan na ganun.”
Guiao earlier bared to Spin.ph in a separate interview that he’s not sold on the idea of trading away Teng to Globalport, but insisted he will not stand in the way if the player requests for it.
Asked whom he wants to get from Globalport if and when a trade involving Teng is endorsed, Lapid named his one and only choice.
“Si Erick Arejola (Globalport’s head of basketball operations) ang kukunin kong kapalit,” said Lapid before bursting into a loud laugh.
