RAIN or Shine is hoping to maximize the two weeks remaining before its first game in the Commissioner’s Cup, but import prospect Kenny Adeleke of Nigeria is having problems with his travel documents and may be able to plane in only on the eve of the conference opener.
Rain or Shine board governor Mamerto Mondragon said Adeleke, a 6-foot-8 former University of Hartford standout, actually got his offer sheet from Rain or Shine management two days ago.
“Nagpadala na kami ng offer sheet two days ago, pero parang di pa kami sigurado because of his visa requirement saka clearance. Eh ang sabi sa amin, he might only be able to come a day before the opening (of the Commissioner’s Cup),” Mondragon told Spin.ph.
Adeleke, born in Lagos, Nigeria, went undrafted in the 2006 NBA Rookie Draft. But now the 31-year-old has built an impressive resume, seeing action for the defunct Seattle Supersonics during the 2007 NBA Summer League and playing in Israel and Turkey.
Mondragon says they will wait for word from Adeleke’s handlers before planning their next move.
“Hindi siya manggagaling ng US, kundi sa Uruguay. Inaalam pa namin, pero hopefully, we could get him at the earliest possible time,” he added.
The Elasto Painters originally wanted to bring back Wayne Chism, who led them to a semifinal finish in last season’s Commissioner’s Cup, but the do-it-all import couldn’t get his release papers from his team in Israel.
