PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan – Rain or Shine is leaving nothing to chance, reaching an agreement to bring in former Alaska import Wendell McKines as its reinforcement for the season-ending PBA Governors Cup.
Team governor Mamerto Mondragon said coach Yeng Guiao wanted the wide-bodied McKines as the team’s import for the third conference, saying his game “fits the Elasto Painters’ style.”
“We’re getting him (McKines),” Mondragon told Spin.ph just after the All-Stars’ motorcade here in this paradise known for its virgin rainforest and the world’s longest underground river.
“He’ll be coming from a stint in Israel dahil gusto na niya dumiretso dito. So kasama niya na ang asawa niya at dalawang anak,” he added.
The Governors Cup won’t start until May.
But the former New Mexico State standout is arriving next Monday from his impressive stint with Elitzur Ashkelon in the Israeli League, where he averaged 25.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.
Known for his strong inside game, the 26-year-old McKines played for Alaska during the 2013 season, helping the Aces reach the quarterfinals where they eventually lost to San Mig Coffee.
McKines logged solid all-around averages of 29.7 points, 15.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists for the Aces.
After his stint with Alaska, McKines played for Rouen in France followed by a stint with the Anyang KGC in the Korean Basketball league, before winding up in Israel.
The Governors Cup format allows teams to hire imports with a height limit of 6-foot-5 for the top eight finishers of the Commissioner's Cup, while the bottom four teams will be allowed to hire imports with no height restrictions.
Teams also have an option to hire an additional Asian import with a height limit of 6-foot-4.
