THE PBA's 42nd season is barely two weeks old, yet we've already seen the wildest twists and turns during games, penalties for the most strange reasons (like 'sarcastic' behavior), and the most adventurous haircuts from the country's hoops stars.
For reasons we don't know, our PBA stars have become a lot bolder with their style choices when they showed up for the new campaign. And we're not even talking about Terrence Romeo's ever-changing locks or Joe Devance's standout (literally) hairdo.
Here are the three that are either chic or outrageous, depending on your taste:
GABE NORWOOD stays cool
Norwood says it's his way of staying hip and cool.
The Rain or Shine big guard showed up for the new season sporting a Fido Dido-inspired hairdo, which he admitted makes him feel young.
Fido Dido is a popular cartoon character in the 90s used by a multinational beverage company as part of its branding. The figure sports a curly, gelled-up locks with shaved sides - the epitome of coolness.
“Just try to feel young because I see the young guys in the NBA doing this,” he shared to SPIN.ph shortly after a Philippine Cup game at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Norwood said he’s had the hairstyle for ‘a little while now,’ and is just the latest hair trend he did after previously trying a shaved pate, a braded one, and even a flat top.
The 31-year-old product of George Mason University said he just followed the style of Barangay Ginebra’s Joe Devance.
“Joe (Devance) got it started so…,” said Norwood.
The nine-year veteran added he does nothing to the hair other than just ‘a little brush up.’
“That’s natural as it can be,” Norwood said.
JAYJAY HELTERBRAND: 'I just decided to do something different'
The veteran Barangay Ginebra guard attracted a lot of attention on opening day of the PBA 42nd season after showing up at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with a long, wavy hair.
Although he already wore his hair long during the Governors Cup finals between the Kings and the Meralco Bolts, it was the first time the former league MVP wore curly locks for games.
Asked about it, the one half of the celebrated ‘Fast and Furious’ tandem said ‘it was just boredom’ that prompted him to go for a new look this time.
“I decided to do something different,” he said later.
Neither did he try to pattern his hair from someone else's.
“Nope, not inspired by anything,” Helterbrand added.
New season, new look for Phoenix forward JC INTAL
From blonde locks last season, Phoenix forward JC Intal rocked a new hairdo when the Fuelmasters made their debut in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The former Ateneo star attracted a lot of attention when he stepped on the floor with a trendy undercut that featured an untrimmed top that was ponytailed at the back.
Intal said he merely wanted a new look to start the season.
"It's nothing connected naman sa basketball," said the former Gilas Pilipinas forward. "I just want to try something new."
"A month ago lang ito, kasi before nag-blonde ako eh ngayon naman clean cut," he added.
Coming from someone who sported a Son Goku-inspired blond locks last season, nothing surprises us anymore.
