RAIN or Shine finally copped a victory at the expense of erstwhile league-leader Barangay Ginebra, 104-97, on Saturday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
Terrence Watson came up big, finishing with 29 points, 19 rebounds, and six blocks as the Elastopainters finally picked up the win to hike their record to 1-4.
The Elasto Painters made a 14-0 run in the third to pull away, and withstood numerous rallies by the Kings to maintain their lead in their Petron Saturday Special match.
The loss snapped the Kings’ four-game winning streak to drop to 7-2. Ginebra dropped to second place with Magnolia climbing to first place with a 6-1 card.
Watson played his best game of the conference following two lackadaisical games, but he also got a lot of support from the locals with Jewel Ponferada finishing with 18 points and Maverick Ahanmisi and Gabe Norwood scoring 12 and 11 points respectively.
Ahanmisi scored five points in a pivotal third quarter run that turned Rain or Shine’s 61-57 lead into a 75-57 advantage.
Led by Justin Brownlee and LA Tenorio, the Kings came to within four points, 101-97, but Norwood connected on a three-pointer with 2:23 left in the fourth and Rain or Shine’s lead was not threatened after that.
Brownlee had 23 points, 16 rebounds, and nine assists, while Tenorio had 15 points and six rebounds for Ginebra, which still played without Greg Slaughter and Sol Mercado in the match.
