RAIN or Shine has registered its first back-to-back wins in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, but it’s no reason for coach Yeng Guiao to be satisfied.
Beau Belga said the fiery Guiao has been hard on the Elasto Painters, rallying them to play more consistently - especially on defense - for 48 full minutes.
“Ang gusto niya (Guiao) sa amin, maging consistent sa pressure defense. Eh iyun lang siguro, parang same as last conference dahil di pa siya satisfied kung ano nakikita niya dahil alam niya may ibubuga pa,” Belga told Spin.ph.
The Elasto Painters are coming off a 104-98 win over the GlobalPort Batang Pier.
But the heavyweight Rain or Shine slotman believes the team will be able to get its act together as the mid-season tournament wears on.
“Parang sa last conference lang iyan, yung we were like in it dahil gusto naming manalo, gusto naming naglalaro ng buong puso, at yun yung na-achieve namin last conference,” said Belga, obviously referring to Rain or Shine’s semifinal finish in the season-opening Philippine Cup.
The Elasto Painters finished the eliminations of the All-Filipino Cup by winning seven straight games to clinch an outright berth in the semis.
“Sana yun din (hot streak) ma-achieve namin this conference kasi parang laging bitin eh, nakakaabot kami ng semis pero di kami maka-survive sa semis eh,” added the former Philippine Christian University standout.
“Gusto namin ngayon, pag-abot ng semis, yung isang paa namin maihakbang namin sa Finals.”
Teammate Gabe Norwood couldn’t help but agree with Belga.
“Yes, we just get a little inconsistent, though it’s more on the energy more than anything because it isn’t where we need to be,” noted Norwood, the team’s top lock-down defender.
The 6-foot-5 Norwood felt during the course of the team’s two-game winning streak, Rain or Shine doesn’t have the mental fortitude to try to finish off its opponent and win the game convincingly.
“It might be just mentally because we kind of relax. We kinda have the lead, then relax,” he added.
Rain or Shine shoots for a third straight victory when it tangles with tournament-leader Meralco next Wednesday.
