RAIN or Shine’s Extra Rice Inc. welcomed probably its newest member in Pierre Henderson-Niles in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup game against Blackwater on Sunday.
Understandably, Beau Belga and JR Quiñahan were glad to have a burly import who can anchor them in the post - and add additional poundage to the team's beefy frontline.
“Sabi nga namin ni JR, okay na yan para mas mukhang payat tayong dalawa,” Belga chuckled in a short chat with Spin.ph after the game. “Mas malapad siya sa amin.”
Then he turned serious.
“Malaking bagay siya, lalo na yung presence sa post,” Belga said of Henderson-Niles, who finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and one block in 25 minutes before leaving the game due to cramps. “Yun yung wala sa amin eh.”
“Na-depensahan ko siya kahapon at mabigat siya,” Belga continued of the former Memphis Tiger, who looked far from top condition in his debut. “Lalo na siguro pag na-kundisyon, mas mahihirapan yung mga kalaban sa kanya.”
Quiñahan, who led the team with 15 points in 19 minutes off the bench, is hoping Mo Charlo's replacement gets into shape immediately as the E-Painters embrace more of their run-and-gun identity.
“Hindi na intimidation (ang kailangan namin) kasi ang gusto na ni coach takbuhan eh, so kailangan kaming tatlo, makasabay.”
Quiñahan, who has had a conscious effort the shed weight since the start of the season, has shown he can keep up with their wings.
He’s probably trying to get out of the Extra Rice Inc.
“Ewan ko. Sabi nila, kami pa rin tatlo (ang Extra Rice), so okay lang yun,” Quiñahan said with a smile.
