A hobbling Denzel Bowles knocked down an off-balanced shot with 7.1 seconds left for the game-winning basket as defending Purefoods outlasts Talk ‘N Text, 118-117, in a classic, triple overtime game Saturday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Petron Saturday Special at the USEP gym in Davao City.
Bowles, who hurt his left knee following an accidental collision with Talk ‘N Text rookie forward Matt Ganuelas-Rosser in the first overtime, took advantage of the absence of Tropang Texters counterpart import Ivan Johnson, who fouled out in the second extra period.
The former James Madison University standout banged in 11 of his game-high 30 points in the three extra five-minute sessions that enabled Purefoods to escape with the hard-earned win that came after more than three hours of intense battle between the two powerhouse teams.
Talk 'N Text had one final shot of winning the game, but veteran Danny Seigle failed to get a clear view of a basket. By the time Jay Washington had the ball, time had already ran out.
The Hotshots climbed to a share of second spot with their victims at 6-3 as they kept their bid alive of finishing within the top two after the eliminations, which carries has a twice-to-beat incentive.
Joe Devance also played a pivotal role in the win after knocking down two three-point shots in the first overtime to keep the Hotshots in the thick of the fight.
Bowles, who earned Best Player of the Game honors, added 15 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks for the Hotshots.
The game marked just the 10th triple overtime game in the league’s 40-year history, and the first in five years, according to resident statistician Fidel Mangonon.
Five other local players scored in double figures for Purefoods, with Alex Mallari coming off the bench to finish with 17 points, James Yap had 15, Devance with 14, playmaker Mark Barroca 13, and Peter June Simon 10 in a balanced scoring attack.
Johnson led the Tropang Texters with 26 points, 15 rebounds and four steals before fouling out, while Jayson Castro and Matt Ganuelas-Rosser added 24 and 20, respectively.
