THE PBA Office of the Commissioner has decided to cancel the Petron Saturday Special Philippine Cup match pitting Purefoods Star against Barako Bull in Dipolog City owing to the threat posed by super typhoon Ruby to the region over the weekend.
With the typhoon packing intense winds of at least 205 kilometer per hour, weather bureau Pagasa said Zamboanga del Norte has been identified as one of the critical areas under threat when typhoon Ruby makes landfall.
“Zamboanga del Norte has been identified by Pagasa to be one of the critical areas that may be severely affected by the intense winds (of at least 205 kph) and vast rainclouds of the super typhoon,” the PBA said in a statement.
Dipolog is the capital of the province of Zamboanga del Norte in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.
PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial said the Purefoods Star-Barako Bull has instead been moved to December 9, making the season-opening conference’s final elimination round playdate a triple-header at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The match between the defending champion Hotshots and the Energy will kick off at 2 p.m.
Purefoods Star (5-5) is coming off back-to-back losses and will need to beat Barako Bull (4-6), and hope that Barangay Ginebra also wins over Rain or Shine on Sunday to earn a twice-to-beat spot in the quarterfinals.
