JIMMY Alapag is a welcome addition to a deep, star-studded San Miguel squad.
“Nagbibiruan nga kami. We have a 40-above league. Formidable ‘yung lineup namin,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria, when asked about their coaching staff.
“Alam mo naman ngayon nagbabago na ang theme ng basketball. Lahat can dribble, lahat can shoot from the perimeter. Just like in the NBA, we are the Golden State Warriors,” Austria, the 1985 PBA Rookie of the Year, said in jest.
"Talagang star-studded 'yung lineup namin, from players to coaching staff," he added.
The former TNT and Meralco cager also joins a coaching staff that already includes former PBA MVP Ato Agustin and former players Peter Martin, Jorge Gallent, Boycie Zamar and Biboy Ravanes as well as Dayong Mendoza.
Austria said Alapag will definitely make a big impact with the Beermen given his experience not just in the PBA but also internationally.
“Since last year, alam na namin about Jimmy. He is a welcome addition to the team. Alam naman natin ang capability ni Jimmy as a player. Maybe, he can share it to the players. He is an experienced player and a star player. He knows how to win,” he said.
Austria said the team has yet to designate a specific role for Alapag, who is in the middle of San Miguel Alab Pilipinas' title defense in the Asean Basketball League (ABL).
“Actually, hindi pa namin napag-uusapan ‘yung role ng bawat isa. In the next few days, we will talk about it kapag kumpleto na kami. On Sunday, we will have a team building in Tagaytay, mapag-uusapan namin,” said Austria.
The former Gilas captain is just one of a number of SMB members who have national team experience - something that can make the Beermen better, Austria said.
“Etong mga Gilas players, alam nila kung papaano maglaro sa tight game and with their experience, that’s the thing that they can share to the team. Their experience sa national team, it could help a lot,” said Austria.
