TERRENCE Romeo showed a different aspect of his game on Saturday when he dished out a career-high 12 assists in TNT’s victory over Rain or Shine in the final game of the elimination round.
Romeo had two points in 26 minutes, and shot 1 of 6 from the field. He made up for it by facilitating on offense when he tallied double figures in assists in his first game back with TNT since the third window of the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers.
“Nagco-collapse ‘yung defense sa akin so hinanap ko lang ‘yung open man. Lahat naman ng mga kasama ko magagaling so hindi ko pinipilit ‘yung sitwayson,”said Romeo.
TNT coach Nash Racela said Romeo’s performance on Saturday should bode well for KaTropa’s campaign in the Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.
“He should have 12 assists because he is not taking shots. I think he was practicing his passing skills earlier so that’s why he had 12 assists. Again, if he looks to pass, he could hit the open guys. If he looks to shoot, he can get through the net.
“As long as he plays the game correctly, it should serve us well,” said Romeo.
Romeo admitted he is still fatigued from the two matches during the Fiba World Cup Asian qualifiers, but added it was no excuse to perform at a high level since TNT still needed the win over Rain or Shine to secure the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals.
“Kailangan tuluy-tuloy. Kailangan mag-focus,” said Romeo.
Romeo said he is happy for the team getting the third seed but the KaTropa are not satisfied with just getting a high ranking in the quarterfinals.
“Hindi pa ‘yun ‘yung gusto naming makuha. Mas pagbubutihan namin sa playoffs. Kailangan makapasok kami sa semis, then bahala na pagdating sa semis,” said Romeo.
