NORTHPORT coach Pido Jarencio said the Batang Pier made the trade to move Stanley Pringle to Barangay Ginebra in order to deepen its roster with his team in contention for a higher seed in the playoffs but is hounded with injuries.
Jarencio said he felt the Batang Pier needed to make a change in order for the team to sustain their 5-1 win-loss record.
Jarencio said Batang Pier will only have eight players for Wednesday’s game against NLEX with Nico Elorde suffering from a hamstring injury.
“Unang-una, wala kaming player eh,” Jarencio said. “Bukas walo lang kaming maglalaro dahil maraming injured kaya nag-request ako ng player.”
NorthPort on Tuesday dealt Pringle, the team’s explosive scorer, to Barangay Ginebra in exchange of Sol Mercado, Jervy Cruz, and Kevin Ferrer. The trade has been approved by the PBA.
Jarencio said NorthPort acquired players who can immediately contribute to the team’s run this conference, two of whom are even familiar to him.
Cruz and Ferrer played for Jarencio when he was still the coach of University of Santo Tomas with Cruz even helping Jarencio win the 2006 UAAP crown.
Jarencio also said the addition of Mercado will shore up the team’s backcourt.
“’Yung mga kinuha naman namin, unang-una, dating player ko ‘yung dalawa, si Jervy at si Kevin tapos isasama ko na si Sol para may point guard pa na isa dahil si Elorde, injured eh. Si Elorde, it will take like four weeks para maka-recover ang hamstring niya,” Jarencio said.
Jarencio also wishes Pringle all the best as he moves to Ginebra after playing for NorthPort for five years. Pringle was the first overall pick of NorthPort in 2014.
“Sana gumaling na rin injury niya para makatulong din siya sa Ginebra. Win-win situation naman for Ginebra at para sa amin,” said Jarencio.
