ALTHOUGH nursing an injury, Calvin Abueva can’t help but admit that playing Barangay Ginebra and getting a win gives him enough satisfaction.
“Masarap talagang kalaban ang Ginebra kapag ganyan (playoffs),” said Abueva after the Aces scored a 104-97 win over the top seeded Kings that forged a win-or-go home encounter between the two teams on Saturday for the right to advance in the semifinals of the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup.
“Eh yung last na laro namin nung (last season’s Commissioner’s Cup) championship, binigay namin ng todo eh. So ngayon, bigay todo uli kami,”
Despite playing with a sprained right ankle, `The Beast’ was at his element on Wednesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena as he scored in every possible way, grabbed rebounds, and made sure Ginebra big man Japeth Aguilar bleeds for every point of his,
The 6-foot-1 Abueva finished the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds to register just his second double-double this conference,
The huge effort though came at a time when Alaska needed a huge emotional lift.
“Nung na-sprain ako sa last two games ko, walang wala talaga eh. So sabi ko, kapag nakapasok kami sa quarterfinals, ido-doble ko sipag ko at therapy ko,” he said.
“Parang di ko na iniinda yung sakit. Ayun, gumanda ang laro ko, so ngayon, paghahandaan pa namin ang game (on Saturday) para makapasok sa semis.”
The Aces, who had to beat the Meralco Bolts to earn the no. 8 seed entering the playoffs, on Monday, will take a day off Thursday before regrouping on Friday to map out their final game plan for Saturday’s knockout match at the Astrodome.
