CHANCES of hulking import Peter John Ramos extending his stint with expansion franchise KIA Motors all the way to the PBA Governors Cup is highly probable.
Coach Chito Victolero admitted the 7-foot-3 Ramos has been a huge factor in the team’s Commissioner’s Cup campaign where the Carnival remains in the hunt - slim as it may be – for a playoff berth.
And so it’s a no brainer on the part of the team to plan on bringing back the Puerto Rican big man for the season-ending conference beginning on May 5.
“I think PJ is our import again,” said Victolero after the Carnival's 119-99 loss at the hands of top seed Rain or Shine on Sunday.
“Nagkausap na sila (management). Most probably siya `yung choice namin, but I don’t know sa management kung ok na, but he’s definitely our choice.”
Ramos is definitely the primary reason for the Carnival’s sudden turnaround in the mid-season conference, which had the team posting a 4-7 (win-loss) card, including upset wins over powerhouse teams Talk ‘N Text, Alaska, San Miguel, and defending champion Purefoods.
The former Puerto Rican national team member also had five games where he posted 30-point, 20-rebound output and three games of 40-point, 20-rebound showing, according to PBA head statistician Fidel Mangonon.
At the end of KIA’s elimination round campaign, Ramos leads the league in scoring (35.9 points) and rebounding (21.8), while averaging 3.0 assists and 1.3 blocks in 11 games played.
The Carnival also remain in the hunt for a berth in the playoffs depending on the result of the final playdates of the eliminations.
The result was a complete turnaround on KIA’s maiden campaign in the league when it finished with a 1-11 record.
As per ruling on imports in the season-ending tournament, the last four teams following the combined 60 percent result of the Philippine Cup and 40 percent of the Commissioner’s Cup eliminations are allowed to get reinforcements of unlimited height.
Victolero believes even if KIA makes the playoffs, it will still be among the four teams to be given privilege to tap import of unlimited height.
“Sabi sa akin may chance na si PJ pa rin (ang import namin),” said the former guard out of Mapua.
