Pingris provides energy, Yap the firepower as San Mig snaps out of rut

    Aug 25, 2013

MARC Pingris provided the energy, while James Yap rediscovered his shooting touch as San Mig Coffee booked its first win in the PBA Governors Cup with a resounding 118-99 demolition of undermanned Talk ‘N Text on Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Playing with a greater sense of urgency, the Mixers jumped the gun on the Tropang Texters from the get-go, erecting a commanding 39-21 spread at the end of the first period.

The 6-foot-5 Pingris, in his first game back in action after his heroic stint with Gilas Pilipinas, tossed in 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as he injected the energy the Mixers sorely lacked during their first two matches - both losses - this conference.

However, it was Yap’s second half sniping that kept the Tropang Texters from mounting a comeback.

The 6-foot-2 shooting guard out of  University of the East sizzled for 21 points, 15 in the
second half, which he spiked with three triples as the Mixers improved to 1-2 overall in a tie with Air21.

“Well, we caught Talk ‘N Text at a really good time for us anyway, bad for them. They missed a host of players and we’re coming off two losses,” said a beaming San Mig coach Tim Cone afterwards.

Cone also commended Pingris for putting in the effort right in his first game with the team.

“Ping just gave us a huge lift on both sides of the floor. The post work, rebounds, I mean, Ping is back. He gave us just a general good feeling that he’s back in the lineup,” he added.

The fiery San Mig mentor also expressed happiness over the way Yap exploded in the game.

“James got us off early in the game, giving us a positive feel for the game,” noted Cone.

“But it was nice because the guys tried to look for James tonight, trying to get him open shots. You need to feed a shooter like that when he’s struggling. They (Mixers guards) just naturally did it, that’s why I’m proud of it,” he added.

The Tropang Texters fell to an even 1-1 card as they continue to miss the services of four key players in Jason Castro, Jimmy Alapag, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Larry Fonacier.
