EXPECT more of high-scoring guards Terrence Romeo, Stanley Pringle, and Joseph Yeo playing at the same time with Golbalport.
Coach Pido Jarencio disclosed he’s leaning more on using the Batang Pier’s latest edition of the 'three-headed monster' simultaneously, stressing he just wants to exploit the quickness and explosiveness all three are capable of bringing to the table.
“Kung hindi ko gagamitin, sayang naman yung talent ng mga kinuha natin,” he said. “Guard oriented yung team and yun ang strength namin.
“Ini-exploit ko lang naman kaya kailangan gamitin.”
Pringle, Romeo, and Yeo, acquired in the offseason from Barako Bull for a 2016 first-round pick, accounted for almost half of the team’s scoring in its first win in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup game, a 101-94 beating of Star.
The backcourt tandem of Pringle and Romeo led the way with 23 and 20 points, respectively.
That was in contrast to the trio’s 38-point production in the Batang Pier’s opening game against defending champion San Miguel in Davao, which they lost, 97-86.
But Jarencio, who has so far managed to spread the playing minutes among the three, reasoned out that Romeo has yet to fully recover from the rigors of playing for three months with Gilas Pilipinas.
“Pagod tsaka medyo gigil pa,” he said. “Pero eventually, he’ll get his timing back.”
Jarencio though sees the Batang Pier becoming a solid unit once the three – and the rest of the new guys – get adjusted to each other.
“Marami pang iimprove ‘yung team. Yung chemistry medyo kulang pa, pero pag nabuo yan, mas matibay ‘yung team,” said the former University of Santo Tomas player and coach.
He added the Batang Pier will not be contented winning a couple of games.
“May mission itong team na ito - makapunta ng playoffs. After that tingnan natin kung makaabot ng semis up to the finals. Basta kami one game at a time lang,” Jarencio said.
